Principal conductor 1943 to 1970

A LEADING ROLE

After returning to Manchester from his post as conductor of the New York Philharmonic, Sir John Barbirolli took over leadership of the orchestra, which had been significantly diminished due to wartime difficulties.

Barbirolli rebuilt the Hallé "amid wartime difficulties" and developed a strong rapport with both the players and the public. He expanded the orchestra from a part-time ensemble to a full-time, year-round operation.

Over his 27-year tenure, Barbirolli helped establish the Hallé's international reputation through extensive touring and recordings.
